Several times this summer the garden was visited by an individual of the European hornet (Vespa crabo). One early morning there was even one in the organic waste bin, where I think it was sleeping. When I opened the bin it fell out and we were both equally surprised.
But it didn’t work out to get a decent picture… until it finally did!

This wasp seemed interested in the rotting fruit in the buterfly feeding plate and grapes on the ground, but it didn’t eat. I’ve seem this species do that in Italy on overripe figs.
The hornets that visited the garden usually cross it to the wides and sunniest part and start patroling a little bit. As indicated they are very interested in the organic waste bin and have entered it on a number of occasions.
I’m glad this beatiful, large and especially gentle giant has visited frequently. Contrary to their fierce appearance they are far less aggressive than other wasp species. Hopefully they will find the garden a good place to nest one day.
