Out of nowhere a Painted lady (Vanessa cardui) came fluttering in and landed on Common mallow (Malva sylvestris) to proceed laying eggs. I found two.

The peculiar thing is that the plants the butterfly choose to deposit her eggs on were not in the best shape and covered in orange fungus.

Elsewhere in the garden, in the direction from where the butterfly came in, more Common mallow grew and on closer inspection there were some eggs on those as well.
