Common

LOCATION: Krimpen aan den IJssel, garden

OBSERVATION:
2023-IV-17

Awoken overwintering queens are among the first wasps that emerge as the first warm days arrive in early spring. They will take their time to wake up on a sunny spot. Once energised they will start reconnaissance of the environment. This Common wasp (Vespula vulgaris) [1] took a break after exploring on a sunny leaf.

Two queens became active at the same time. One seems to have started a nest underneath the roof around the corner of the back door. She can be seen regularly disappearing underneath the fascia above the bee hotels.

The fascia directly above the back door provides the entrance to a sleeping spot for at least one bat.
