This lovely lady, a European paper wasp (Polistes dominula) thoroughly enjoyed the Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) nectar. The first time this species is observed on this plant in the garden. Each year a specimen will be drinking from the Trumpet vine (Campsis radicans), but that hasn’t happened yet this year.
Very colourful wasps. It would be nice if some day they’d built a nest in the garden.
UPDATE 2022
Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is the favorite of P. dominula in the garden. This year large numbers of the wasp are present and many specimen can be found on these plants.
