This larger, conspicuous flying fly suddenly passed me and landed on the bee hotel. The animal flew up a few times to relocate itself on the bee hotel and was rather easy to approach. It is a male Empis tessellata ^[1].

I hadn’t seen it before in the garden: a new garden species!
